Our Story Our Facilities Our Organization

Built in 1857, Union Hall has served continuously as a place of worship, a library, a meeting place and a community hub since that time. The surrounding community has become known by that name. On the map, along with the place called Union Hall, you will find the Old Union Hall Road and the Union Hall Creek. At one time the Union Hall Tigers baseball team called the area home.

Throughout much of its history, the hall was kept alive largely through the efforts of the Union Hall Women’s Institute.

Today the hall is owned by the Union Hall Community Centre, a Registered Charity, whose purpose is to maintain the facility for the benefit of the community.

Union Hall is mainly self-sufficient, with revenue from rentals of the hall and its exterior sign, along with private donations. Our income is supplemented by funding from the Municipality of Mississippi Mills, Almonte Community Coordinators (The Hub/Rebound), with additional support from local businesses.

Union Hall, at 1984 Wolf Grove Road at the corner of Tatlock Road in Mississippi Mills, is a classic community hall which retains its rustic charm despite the addition of modern conveniences such as a modern kitchen and washrooms. A ramp at the front door and an accessible washroom make it a welcoming space for all. There is a stage with a digital piano. A defibrillator and other first aid supplies are on hand.

With a capacity of about 75 people, the hall is the perfect place for family gatherings such as birthday or anniversary parties, baby showers, celebrations of life and even small weddings or receptions. The hall is also used for activities such as concerts, meetings or workshops, yoga classes, and small commercial events. Each year, the hall is host to the Crown & Pumpkin Studio Tour as well as the Festival of Small Halls. Hall-sponsored events include the popular Pancake Breakfast, held in maple syrup season each spring, a Blueberry Tea in late summer, a community Potluck and Talent show in the fall, and a Community Builders’ Craft Fair in early November.

Situated at a busy rural crossroad, our outdoor sign is popular for promotion of meetings, community events and commercial events, as well as private messages such as birthday or anniversary greetings.

Both the hall and the sign are available for rent at a reasonable cost.

The Union Hall Community Centre is managed and maintained by volunteers from the community, including a Board of Directors elected at an Annual General Meeting. A larger team pitches in to help with hall events, posting messages on the exterior sign, occasional maintenance chores and other tasks which arise from time to time.

Volunteering at Union Hall can be very rewarding. It is a great way to connect with people in your community while helping to keep local traditions alive. Do you have a talent or skill you would like to share? We welcome everyone’s contribution, large or small, and do our best to make it a fun experience for everyone. We pause to acknowledge that we gather on unceded Anishinaabe and Algonquin territory - land and waters taken without consent or fair compensation -

land and waters that hold a history and tell a story that needs to be given voice, heard, and respected. We acknowledge and give thanks for the First Peoples of the
past who lived on and loved this land, travelled its waterways, and breathed its air before us and for those who are present among us now.
